Not all that glitters is gold
Although the Ardennes are known for all kinds of vacation activities, the changeable weather means you should always have something to protect you from the rain. A longer camping or caravan vacation can therefore turn into a rainy game of chance. And: apart from nature, the Ardennes are not exactly blessed... with cultural treasures (apart from moules & frites). I had come here for the 24-hour race at the Circuit de Spa in July. I had booked three days, reserved in advance, paid everything in full in advance (interesting - Belgian - variant, especially in case you have to cancel, then the money is gone). The site is "square, practical, good" - the latter with minor weaknesses. You can tell that this campsite is not run by a family, but is part of a larger (hotel/leisure?) group - with some young employees (who probably have a summer job there), not always motivated. Once you've left the highway, drive through the countryside for a while and enter the coordinates into the GPS. Otherwise you may end up in the middle of nowhere, which is not necessarily recommended on the small roads with a large caravan. The campsite is in an idyllic and secluded location in the countryside, between cow pastures that didn't exude the typical smell at the time. In the nearby village of Sart-les-Spa there is a good supermarket as well as smaller stores such as bakeries and butchers. There is also a bread roll service and a shop with a manageable range of products on site. The site has a high proportion of mobile homes and two different types of pitches: with and without electricity. The units with electricity are quite close together, presumably to optimize the space. The ones without or with very distant electricity columns are a bit more rustic and you can pitch your tent, camper van etc. a bit more "free-range". There are two sanitary buildings, which are tidy and were cleaned at least twice a day in July/August. If the site were really full in the high season, four showers (for the men) per sanitary building would probably be a bit small. Perhaps it never will be, precisely because of the limited facilities. The campsite offers a little childcare - I remember how every morning a few supervisors for the children's activities moved around the campsite like the Pied Piper of Hamelin to collect the children for games and music. I should also mention the swimming pool - a larger pool - which is of course very popular with families with children. There were a lot of Dutch holidaymakers there this year, so it's good that they weren't able to clog up the A61 heading south and back! I was surprised by the large number of NL license plates, given that the distance between the Ardennes and Holland (no matter where) is not particularly great. For me, a longer vacation there would be nothing at all, unless you prefer long hikes or bike rides through the Ardennes (even in the rain). To summarize: good average, few positives, few real negatives - for my purpose of spending a few days near the race track in Spa, the Spa d'Or was ideal.

Great place in a very beautiful landscape. Very friendly and helpful staff. Great swimming pool. No lunch break 👍

We came to this campsite by chance. The site is beautifully situated! The sanitary facilities are clean. A nice place for hiking and mountain biking. The pitches are large and clean and we couldn't find anything negative about this site. We will definitely visit this site again.

A good site, but there are considerable problems for camper vans due to the grass if it rains for a long time. - We were there at the beginning of October. My grade: 2

Very nice site, with a slight slope, large pitches, water, waste water, electricity always for several pitches together. Beautiful swimming pool with sunbathing lawn. The site is located below the village on the edge of the forest. Several wash houses (clean), staff very friendly and helpful. Some German... is also understood. We were almost the only German guests. Mostly Dutch (2/3) and Belgian (1/3) guests. There were also youth groups/camps on site. The quietness of the campsite was therefore not very strict. Children's entertainment available, but only in Dutch. Playground facilities good. Also paintball field. Store well stocked. Central, ideal starting point for hikes in the Ardennes. Stayed here with my family of 5.

Had booked for a week and paid everything on arrival, a hefty sum. Unfortunately on the second day my wife broke her ankle on the hiking trail around the campground and we had to cancel our vacation, no reason for Spa D'Or to return even a penny of the sum. The only gold there is in their till :((
