There are safes for pitches, where a small information folder and the chips for toilet and washroom access are provided. We booked and paid for the pitch online 2 hours in advance. Only caravans over 6.50 m were allowed. Before we drove through the barrier on arrival, we could already see from the path that the pitch we had booked was too... small for our large 9 m long and 2.50 m wide caravan. We then went to the "wooden booth", which was supposed to be the reception desk, and asked to be able to choose another pitch, as there were still 20 pitches available at the time! That didn't suit her at all and she got stroppy. We then left again, even though we had paid for the night.
We do not value an unobjective response from the operator. As with all other negative reviews, it is always the campers who are in the wrong and allegedly misrepresent the situation.
Dear campers, even if you are only passing through for one night, like us, keep your hands off this totally outdated, unkempt campsite, which is difficult to access with a large caravan, is noisy and has an unspeakably unfriendly operator. Here you simply get the impression that someone wants to enrich themselves for little work and service. The site is (acoustically) close to the highway, but it takes a while to get there via small roads.
The positive thing is that you can get to the site late without having to check in in person thanks to the automatic license plate recognition.
The... site itself somehow breathes the 'breath of doom'. Many relatively unkempt permanent camper pitches, the holidaymaker pitches are untidy and the suspicious looks of the permanent campers do not create a feel-good effect. It is also unpleasant that although the site is called 'Campingplatz am Steinrodsee', access to the lake is not accessible due to blue-green algae contamination and the fact that it is leased to the fishing club.
On the positive side, the sanitary facilities are spacious and clean.
From our point of view, the site is just about ok for an overnight stay. Incidentally, you can be in Darmstadt from there in 30 minutes by bike. The sanitary facilities are clean, as is the scullery. The pitches are all fine, lots of permanent campers. There is a small lake right next to the site, which belongs to a fishing club and is not intended for people... and dogs. I had booked the pitch for a course in Darmstadt and had the biggest problem with the fact that no vehicles were allowed to move for two hours over lunchtime. Even those who arrive "sometime during the day" are forced to take a nap outside the gates. Guests have a magnetic key that opens all gates and doors. Everyone is meticulous about locking up right behind them, so this place is extremely secure. As a woman traveling alone, I really appreciated that. Visiting family in the Rhine-Main area on the pitch. The operators are very friendly and customer-oriented, the site is well maintained. The owners are not responsible for airplanes taking off (not between 11pm and 5am) or the noise of the nearby A5. The wash house is not visually... up to date, but it is very clean! In return I accept longer closing times for cleaning. Showers are hot and included in the price, another plus. The permanent campers are in the majority, but unlike on many campsites they are friendly and open when dealing with short-term guests. The costs are not too high and the operator family gave us a very fair overall price, thank you very much for that.
