From Castelnuovo train station Buses leave from the bus terminal in the centre of Castelnuovo at 14:00 and 16:00 and pass just above the train station five minutes later. Coming out of the station you will see a staircase in …front and to the left leading up to the main road above. Cross the road and hail the blue / white bus heading for Chiozza. At Chiozza take the small windy road downhill towards Prunecchio for 1.2km, ignoring signposts to Loc. Pianatagliata – keep going straight past an alter on the right, hunting dogs soon after, then another five minutes and you will pass the sign to Prunecchio. Keep walking another two or three minutes until after a couple of bends you will see the sign to Paladini. Walk down the green road and turn left before reaching the cottage. You can also hike to Wild Camping Paladini: From the train station go up the steps in front of you to the main road and turn left. Soon the main road will swing right for a series of hair-pin bends – at this point leave the road and go straight up the pedestrian track, to find the road again about 500 metres above you. Keep straight along this road, past the roundabout, past two supermarkets and straight on ignoring signposts to Chiozza to the right. Shortly after this turning the road swings away to the left and crosses a bridge. Immediatealy before this bridge there is a gateway leading straight on into what looks like a private farmhouse. You will have been walking for about 3km at this stage. Go through the gate and straight on, and follow the dirt road up to the right (just after a stream). This road winds around a couple of bends for about 700 metres. At a point where there is an elbow-turn to the right you will see a small track going straight ahead – there is often a trailer and chopped wood at this point. Walk along this track and you will soon see the river far down below you. After about 10 minutes of this track you get to the old mule-track which connects Castiglione with Paladini and Chiozza. The medieval bridge is just below you at this point if you fancy a rest or swim before heading up hill. Coming onto the mule-track turn right and up, and keep going until you see a signpost for Prunecchio & Chiozza – just as the ground levels out. The sign directs you up to the right – keep walking up for about 700 metres and you will see a cottage. Stay on the road passsing the cottage – Wild Camping Paladini is 50 metres further on to the right. This walk should take under two hours – a good deal less if you walk fast. Driving From Lucca: Drive into the centre of Lucca and you reach the ringroad around the walls of the town. Continue clockwise around the walls until you find a sign for Castelnuovo di Garfagnana / Abetone / Barga – take this road SS12. Keep following signs for Castelnuovo – you need to keep your eyes peeled. About 30 minutes on this road, and just 200 metres before you arrive at Castelnuovo, take the first turn right off the roundabout – which is a new tunnelled road by-passing Castelnuovo. It is signposted Orrechiella in brown. This new road is about 1 km long. At the far end take the first exit off the roundabout and keep going straing for about another kilometer. You will pass two supermarkets on the right – handy for shopping on your way up. Shortly after the supermarkets there is a fork up to the right sign-posted Chiozza. Follow this road uphill for six kilomtres to the village of Chiozza and park in the public car park on the right. At Pizzeria La Grotta turn left, downhill, along a small side-road. Keep straight on this road, ignoring signs to the right to Campo Sportivo and to the left to Loc. Pianatagliata. After approximately 1.5 km there is an S-bend below a white house above on the left– on the lower part of second bend you will see a hand-made signpost for Paladini and one to Castilgione for walkers pointing away from the tarred road and down a track. Wild Camping Paladini is 300m down this green road – watch out for the yurt and open kitchen area before you get to the cottage.
