Fact #1: Over 2000 Campsites Await You Here

image

You’ll find a large selection of campsites to fit every camper’s preferences in the Netherlands. Many Dutch campsites are by the water or in picturesque landscapes. Lots of sites cater to families with kids, so it’s not unusual to find a campsite with a restaurant, a pool complex or an entertainment programme. Of course, there are also smaller sites that promise rest and relaxation.

Fact #2: Camping Vreehorst is the Country’s Most Popular Campsite

With 4.69 out of 5 stars, Camping Vreehorst came out on top and won the 2019 camping.info award. When you stay at this site nestled in a beautiful location near Winterswijk, you’ll experience top-quality camping and days full of relaxation. For the kids, there’s a large playground, air pillows, a pool complex, and sports pitches. Campers particularly love the very clean site and the friendly staff.

Fact #3: Average Prices on Dutch Campsites

image

On average, a night on a Dutch campsite will cost two adults €23.28. In our European Price Comparison, the Netherlands come out somewhere in the middle. Many Dutch sites have excellent infrastructure and great facilities, so keep that in mind when calculating your holiday budget. Of course, prices always vary from site to site, particularly depending on the size of the campsite and how many extras they offer.

Fact #4: A Country of Campers

image

It’s a stereotype that the Dutch are always travelling with their caravans, heading from one campsite to the next. As with many assumptions, there’s a bit of truth to it. There are about 27 caravans for every 1,000 people. That’s not bad, but the trophy doesn’t go to the Netherlands: It goes to their north-eastern neighbour: Sweden has even more caravans per capita. Who’d have thought it?

Fact #5: There are More Bicycles than People in Amsterdam

image

If you’ve been to Amsterdam before, this probably comes as no surprise to you, because when you’re there, you’ll see loads of bicyclists zipping around the city. If you’re not fast enough, you might have even had a run-in with a cyclist. The city has more bicycles than inhabitants, and more than 60% of the locals ride every day.

Fact #6: The Dutch and Marriage Equality

image

Same-sex couples in the Netherlands have been able to marry since 2001. This small country on the North Sea was the first place in the world to adopt this policy, and since then, it’s inspired many other countries to do the same. Their history as a trading country has helped make the Dutch generally quite tolerant and open to others. Live and let live isn’t just a saying here; it’s a way of life.

Fact #7: Tulips Are from the Netherlands?

image

No other flower is as closely associated with a country as the tulip is to the Netherlands. Tulips aren’t actually from the Netherlands originally, though, but from Turkey. The Dutch traders brought these flowers back to their home country, and today, the Netherlands is the world’s leading exporter of tulips in every colour. Each year during tulip season, a trip to Keukenhof is a fantastic highlight: Here, tulips and other flowers grow as far as the eye can see.

Fact #8: The Dutch are the Tallest

Not only are the Dutch cosmopolitan, tolerant, and nature-lovers, they’re also quite tall as well. The men, at least, are among the tallest in the world, reaching an average height of 182.5 cm. (By the way, Portugal is the European country with the shortest average height for men.)

Fact #9: Swimming Cows Graze Near Rotterdam

image

The Dutch are quite innovative, and they’ve developed some incredible ideas, particularly for things relating to the water. In addition to metres-high dykes near Rotterdam, you’ll also find a two-storey floating cowshed. The cows essentially swim and graze at the same time. The Floating Farm integrates food production into the city's daily life and gives agriculture a face.

Fact #10: The Highest Point in the Netherlands

image

The Netherlands is a flat country, which is why it’s such a great place to go cycling. If you’re hoping to find towering mountains here, you’ll be sorely disappointed: The Vaalserberg is the highest point in the whole country, and it sits at only 322.5 m above sea level. A third of the country is below sea level, though, and there are hardly any hills, which is why this low mountain is the peak point of the Netherlands.

With these facts in mind, you should be more than ready for a holiday in the Netherlands, and you’ll be able to share your knowledge with other campers that you meet there.
