- An T.August 2021PlusuriNature, hiking, isolationMinusuriInsulationFantastic location, two completely different nightsWe spent two nights at this campsite in August.
The approach via the 214 was no problem with a "normal" VW Multivan in summer. The long journey keeps you on site. I would no longer call Thakgil an "insider tip".
Night 1: a huge group of young Go campers partied loudly in the cave until after 1am. The... sanitary facilities were in a very unclean state after this night.
Night 2: the anticipated peace and quiet. Heavenly.
The three signposted hikes are also highly recommended.Tradus automat. - Michael P.August 2017PlusuriGreat location in fantastic nature. Ideal for hiking. Clean and tidy. Friendly staff. Plenty of space.MinusuriDifficult to reach without a carInsider tip! One of the most beautiful campsites in IcelandOn our way along the south coast, we spent two nights in Þakgil, near Vik. Just getting there from Route 1 is great. There are so many fantastic views. A 4x4 vehicle is ideal for the gravel road, but a "normal" car is also fine. However, it's almost impossible to get there without a car. Possibly by... hitchhiking. Then you can reach the campsite through a majestic gorge. The location is remote, but that's why it's perfect (for us). It's very quiet there, no car noise. The sanitary facilities are fairly new and were always very clean for us. The setting is fantastic, surrounded by picturesque mountains. There was plenty of space for everyone, both for tents and campervans/caravans. The lady at the campsite reception was super nice and gave us lots of help and tips for hikes. In bad weather, there is a cave where candles are lit and there are benches and tables. You can eat there or sit and play cards. Outside there are barbecues that you can use. This campsite is ideal for relaxing, but also as a starting point for hikes up to Mýrdalsjökull. I could have stayed there longer.Tradus automat.
- RS A.July 2017MinusuriIn view of this awesome location - NOSimply beautiful! After a spectacular journey, we were glad to finally reach our destination... and found ourselves in an almost mystical valley, surrounded by rugged mountains, a waterfall and a gorge that was perfect for hiking. For us, this was the most beautiful place during our camping stay. We received a very friendly welcome. The sanitary facilities were clean, there is a drying room and even a cave as a lounge area. Unbeatable!Tradus automat.

- Johannes H.June 2015Idyllic locationFor me, this is one of the most beautifully situated campsites in Iceland. Idyllic location at the end of a valley. Extremely quiet, and as a special feature there is a cave as a recreation room with an open fire!Tradus automat.
