"A campsite from the past - In many respects, time has stood still a little at "Le Clos Normand". It is a site that has clearly been in operation for many decades. It is located in southern Normandy right on the doorstep of the Pays de la Loire and Brittany, so it is certainly suitable as a transit site when traveling to the Loire Valley or Brittany. The site is located between the tiny village of Couterne and the town of Bagnols-de-l'Orne, which has a long history as a spa town with remarkable spa gardens. The reception is extremely friendly, they are delighted to welcome a guest from Germany - you should choose a pitch of your choice, electricity will be put on by the host; the night is spectacularly cheap at around 12 euros in 2015. So you can find something between bushes or on the small meadows, semi-shaded under trees, next to seasonal campers from the UK or permanent campers from France (don't worry, they are no comparison to their German garden dwarf and pinewood panelled awning counterparts) in the sun or completely shaded, as you prefer. The view from the edge of the pitch extends over the fence to the surrounding farmers' fields. The infrastructure is not outstanding, but overall: there is a bar on the pitch that also offers small snacks, for example on the notice board in the sanitary building, but there is no bread service (which has otherwise been common on small pitches for ages). You have to cycle about a kilometer up the road towards Bagnols, where there is an Intermarché right at the traffic circle, which is quite new and very well stocked for its rural location. On the other side of the traffic circle you come to Bagnols itself, which is well worth a visit. The old image as a spa and bathing town dating back over a hundred years is being swept out and cultivated everywhere, a walk through the spa gardens is nice, but is already over after a good three quarters of an hour, unless you still want to feed the ducks. The white Église du Sacre-Coeur, which towers over the city, is also worth a visit. It is not a cathedral, but it is interesting to look at from the outside. You can also buy a German newspaper here and there in the small Tabac-Presse stores in the Kurpark. For summer travelers, there is the rather large piscine municipal, the municipal swimming pool. Here you can swim and cool off for little money. It takes less than ten minutes to get there by bike, but you have to pedal a little before entering Bagnols, as it is uphill, as can happen in Normandy. Back to the campsite: it has a pleasant and warm atmosphere, and for one or two nights you are happy to make the usual concessions - if you are not too spoiled - partly because of the reasonable price, but then you have to pack your bags. These concessions are particularly necessary in the sanitary facilities, which are basically clean, but are so old that even I, who has been traveling France and its smallest campsites and municipalities for over thirty years, was surprised. I have included a few pictures to give you an idea. As there is a basic level of hygiene, you can live with it for a day or two, at least I don't have any qualms about it, you have to see it as a journey into a bygone age. More discerning natures should rather move on to the next place, even if I couldn't recommend anything specific. After two hot summers with week-long temperatures of around 37° to 40°C in 2014 and 2015, I'll probably be heading back to Brittany or the Loire Valley to cycle again in 2016 - and if I take the route via Normandy, I'd like to come back here, despite the concessions, simply because of the friendliness and the feeling of well-being that immediately sets in on the plot, which is quiet, cozy and peaceful. And that is a vacation!
