As you prefer to stroll through the distilleries in Cognac (be careful, the tours are outrageously expensive), you should allow for a good hour's walk. The best way is always along the Charente river, which runs past the campsite. Once a week a winegrower... comes by for a wine tasting (Thursdays, I think). M. Lasceux makes fine and honest wine, his rose is inexpensive and drinkable. His Pineau de Charente, which he sells at a much lower price than the winegrowers around him, is particularly delicious. The restaurant on the square is usually closed, it's just a snack bar anyway. But you can order baguettes and croissants there in the morning - they are also good.
