"Pure tranquillity - campsite that we drove to due to a lack of choice. And to get to this site, we had to take a long detour due to roadworks. The site itself is clean, well laid out, close to the Rhine and has a small playground. We had to park our motorhome in an asphalted area, the pitches on the meadow are probably intended for caravans. The area is more for those seeking relaxation, possibly also for anglers, as it is very remote. Both the staff and the manager are polite and customer-friendly. And remember, motorhome drivers greet each other.

"Peace, nature and proximity to water above all else... - Camping de grote altena is perfect for peace and quiet, nature, boat watching and cycling. The "lightweight" sanitary facilities are well-kept and clean and good by Dutch camping standards (but can't compete with modern, brick-built sanitary blocks on German campsites...but the quality and hygiene are still perfectly ok). The number of toilets, showers and washing facilities is perhaps a little limited. On arrival, you are taken directly to the pitch you have booked and the caravan is positioned precisely by the campsite staff using an electric trolley if necessary. There is something special here: the pitches are equipped with awnings and the positioning of the caravan and motorhome is precisely specified and must be adhered to. At first glance unusual but in practice very advantageous...optimal view of the water is ensured, distances to the neighbors are ok (separating hedges are not necessary) everyone has their awning floor (is made of plastic fabric - and if you have a smaller tent like us, you can easily drive tent pegs through the awning floor - is also allowed) and there are no brown lawns from the tent of the predecessor. Lidl+Aldi+Albert Hein can be easily reached by bike. (Bring what you can from Germany...everything is more expensive here than here...) We were here in June and the river was inviting for a swim: amazingly clean and not cold! But you shouldn't go in above chest height...otherwise you end up in the fairway and later in Rotterdam... The shore offers a super sandy beach in places and was 10 meters away from the pitch :-) There was no traffic noise on the site at all...the inland waterway traffic is sometimes louder, but you're actually here to watch boats, so there's always something to watch :-) Pure nature in the surrounding area...wild horses on both sides of the shore, storks etc. The place definitely gets our recommendation! We will be back!

"Perfect location for relaxing, sightseeing and watching ships :-) - We spent a week here to see Nijmegen and Arnhem by bike and just to relax. To cut a long story short: the place is just great. When it's raining, you can watch ships, and when the weather is good, you can enjoy the (typically Dutch) fantastic cycle paths. Most of the pitches are located directly on the Waal, everything is quite spacious and always clean. Electricity, water, waste, ... all no problem. Only the food supply is limited to a bread roll service, for everything else you have to go by car - which is of course no problem. The sanitary facilities are cleaned regularly and are in immaculate condition. Well, the operators won't win a design prize for this, but everything you need is there and it's really clean. There is a small restaurant at the eastern end of the site. Here too with a direct view of the river, a small but excellent menu, friendly service and the option of take-away. Another highlight: the owner offers a delivery service for dinner cooked by her according to recipes from her Indonesian homeland. If you order by 22:00 the evening before and give your pitch number, the food will be delivered directly to your pitch the next evening - we tried it one evening, it tastes fantastic and is simply a great idea and service.

"Beautiful place directly on the Waal - We had a pitch with our caravan right by the water. The operators are very nice. The site is ideal for excursions to Nijmegen and Arnhem. The sanitary facilities are clean.

Profile

Onze camping Camping De Grote Altena ligt in het hart van de Betuwe aan de rivier de Waal, op een steenworp afstand van Arnhem en Nijmegen. Het omliggende rivierenlandschap kenmerkt zich door glooiende uiterwaarden, kronkelende rivierdijken en pittoreske dijkwoningen. Hier …kunt u volop genieten van het schitterende uitzicht op de rivier en de scheepvaart. Onze camping kenmerkt zich door een rustige en gemoedelijke sfeer. Dit maakt het verblijf zeer geliefd bij mensen die houden van natuur, rust, fietsen, wandelen en vissen. Kampeerterrein Het open en langgerekte terrein beschikt over 150 ruime kampeerplaatsen waarvan de helft direct aan de rivier de Waal. Naast 20 jaarplaatsen en 55 seizoenplaatsen beschikt onze camping over een groot aantal (circa 75) toeristische kampeerplaatsen en een trekkersveld. Op dit veld kijkt u uit op een visvijver. Elke kampeerplaats is voorzien van een eigen elektriciteitsaansluiting (6A), een gemeenschappelijke waterkraan en een draadloze internetverbinding (WiFi). Voorzieningen Onze camping beschikt over moderne sanitaire voorzieningen. Alle drie sanitairgebouwen zijn voorzien van toiletten, douches, afwasgelegenheid en een uitstort voor het chemisch toilet. Het gebruik van warm/heet water voor zowel douches als tapwater is gratis. In het centraal gelegen sanitairgebouw is naast een wasserette ook een babyroom, een familiedouche en een invalidenruimte aanwezig. Sport en spel Voor jong en oud is er voldoende sport- en spelaccommodatie. Naast een kinderspeeltuin en een groot sportveld kan ook gebruik worden gemaakt van een tafeltennistafel, een groot schaakspel, een trampoline en een jeu d'boules baan. Bij minder goed weer kunt u zich vermaken in onze recreatieruimte. Naast een televisie- en videotoestel zijn in deze ruimte ook diverse spelletjes en boeken c.q. tijdschriften aanwezig. Eten en drinken Op ons Waalterras kunt u onder genot van een drankje en/of hapje lekker genieten van het prachtige uitzicht op de rivier. Voor een uitgebreid diner kunt u gebruik maken van het uitstekende restaurant De Altena (behoort niet bij de camping!). Bij de receptie kunt u dagelijks vers brood voor de volgende dag bestellen. Voor de overige boodschappen kunt u in het dorp Oosterhout (op ca. 1,5 km afstand) bij een tweetal dorpswinkels terecht. In het nabijgelegen dorp Elst (op ca. 4 km afstand) zijn meerdere supermarkten voorhanden en kunt u ook gezellig winkelen. Dagtochten en vermaak Onze unieke ligging (in het hart van de Betuwe) biedt tal van mogelijkheden voor het maken van diverse dagtochten. Al wandelend of fietsend over de rivierdijk kunt u genieten van de karakteristieke kerkdorpjes, bloeiende fruitboomgaarden en glooiende uiterwaarden. Ook ligt onze camping aan de wandelroute “Het Lingepad”. Bij mooi weer kunt u op het strand van het zonnetje genieten, of lekker struinen langs het water. Vissers kunnen hun hengel uitgooien in de rivier of in de talloze wielen of strangen.
