Stay: Apr 2014
" - The first problem right at the beginning: this place is not called DES but LES Dunes. In full: Camping Municipal Les Dunes. (There is also a DES DUNES a few kilometers away, but the site on the map at this point is definitely LES DUNES) We stayed at this campsite for 9 nights over Easter 2014. However, it has never been so difficult for me to rate a campsite. That's why I'm trying to describe our experience in detail. This is probably the only 4-star campsite that doesn't have a website and isn't particularly keen on caravan guests. Booking was not easy - at first I was only able to find out the telephone number, called and checked availability with my broken French. It was not possible to book by phone, I was told to send an email - the email address was dictated to me in a semi-comprehensible way. The first contact was definitely not friendly. And as there was something wrong with the e-mail address and it was too stupid for me to call again, I actually wanted to look for an alternative place. But then I found the e-mail address online (by the way: camping-bd@wanadoo.fr ) I received a confirmation immediately and the vacation was fixed. On arrival, I received a rather unfriendly welcome and the lady at reception didn't remember my reservation and didn't have it in her system. She wanted to see the confirmation email, which luckily I had with me. After a brief shock, however, everything was fine. After paying for our entire stay in advance by VISA card, we were allocated a pitch and given a card for the barrier in return for a deposit. The campsite consists of 98% permanently installed mobile homes. Only in the entrance area are there about 5 pitches for mobile homes and in the middle of the site there are a maximum of 20 plots which are allocated variably to caravan, motorhome or tent tourists. Both the size and the condition of the pitches are OK: not particularly well-kept lawns on sandy ground with hedges between the pitches. In my opinion, a 20m power cable is not enough everywhere. There are 2 sanitary blocks, although only one is equipped with showers. There are no gender-specific separations in either house. The toilets have no toilet seat and you also have to bring your own toilet paper. The washing cubicles only have cold water and the sinks do not have hot water either. With 4 stars and the basic price, I would have expected something else. Hot showers are possible, but cost an additional €1 per 5 minutes. However, I would like to mention that the sanitary facilities were not modern but always very clean, which is also due to the fact that they are only frequented by the few tourist campers. In general, the cleaning lady was the friendliest person on the site. Incidentally, dogs and cats are welcome free of charge - but there is also a flock of stray cats living on the site. There is no service at all on the campsite: no WiFi, no store, no snack bar, no baguettes in the morning - nothing! However, a supermarket is about 5 minutes away and that's where the promenade of the beautiful little lakeside village with various restaurants, stores etc. begins. The Bray-Dunes beach promenade runs parallel to this. Not far from the campsite there is also a small Carrefour supermarket and at the other end of the village a Carrefour supermarket with petrol station, launderette, neighboring DIY store, etc. In 10 minutes by car you can be in the suburbs of Dunkerque where there are discount stores and everything else your heart desires. There are various hypermarkets about 20 minutes along the highway in the direction of Calais. And now to the actual thing: The location of the campsite is brilliant - very close to a great sandy beach and beautiful dunes. We really enjoyed walking along the beach, which is also permitted with dogs. For example, you can walk or cycle across the beach to Belgium (De Panne) and meet kite surfers, horse riders, carriages, sailing carriages, kite flyers, etc. along the way. We made great day trips to "Bergues" (where the cult film "Welcome to the Sch'tis" was filmed) and Dunkerque. We also really enjoyed the nearby Belgian town of Veurne. All in all, we had a really nice vacation in Bray-Dunes.
