" - The route to "Camping Friedenstal" (without the 'h'!) leads via Nideggen down to Abenden, a small village with just a few hundred inhabitants. Riding a bike to Nideggen or anywhere else is only for the hardy - at best, a hiking stick will come in handy here for the inexperienced, it's just too steep. Luckily, there is a small, modern bakery and patisserie that offers fresh bread rolls and an abundance of delicious cakes every day. Newspapers are also available. The bakery is about 300 meters from the campsite on foot (cross the bridge and take the second turning to the left). The campsite itself is mostly occupied by permanent campers, who populate the area to the right of the access road and behind the centrally located sanitary building. To the left of the access road is a strip of meadow, perhaps 60 meters long, right next to the Rur, which babbles gently along (a wonderful backdrop). Only here are there tourist pitches for tents and campers. The sanitary block is still quite new and very clean. Hot water in the showers is included in the price and can be adjusted at will. Unfortunately, despite the high standard of hygiene, all the toilets are paperless and there is no soap at the washbasin. To wash up, the path leads you about 20 meters further into a dilapidated witch's cottage. It is locked - the rusty key dangles from a hook in the middle of the landscape on the camper meadow. There is something bizarre about it. Electricity is paid for according to consumption; overall, the mixed calculation per overnight stay is very reasonable. The Saurbier couple make a friendly effort to accommodate short-term campers. Unfortunately, this small site also suffers from long-established permanent campers (including their hordes of garden gnomes and lolling ceramic bathing beauties), whose own lives have obviously become so dull over the years that they have to focus primarily on the lives of others. A permanent camper, for example, asked us what we were "doing here"; after a shower in the morning, we were told that we shouldn't shower for so long, as it costs money and unnecessarily increases everyone's fees. Of course, the self-appointed court policeman on duty, who warns you to walk at walking pace on the premises in a commanding tone, is not to be missed. These are all excesses that unfortunately occur in some places of this kind, sometimes more, sometimes less pronounced. In any case, despite the commitment of the operators, people passing through are put off by the fact that their stay is spoiled - they are not likely to return. In view of the friendly owners and the beautifully situated, well-kept site, this is once again regrettable.
