" - (English review below german..) The “most northern campground of the world” is located in an incredible position at the edge between Adventfjord and Isfjord close to the airport Longyear. Due to the very isolated location of the Svalbard archipelago, this campground can not be treated as average, so arriving with car or camper is not recommended because only very few roads are available around Longyearbyen. All most all visitors arrive with regular flights operated from Oslo or Tromsoe. From the Airport a short walk crossing the car park and down a small path you can reach the place within a few minutes. The setup looks more than a hut in the alps than a campground. The service building, containing the sanitary parts and the lounge / kitchen, allows the cocking and eating on existing electric stoves, using existing dishes, pans and pots. You will sleep outside in your own carried tent, you may also rent one of the existing tents, please reserve up front. At the time of my stay, which was on the very early Saison, not all was functioning, but there where only 3 guests and no real problem arrives. The pricing level with 100 NOK (approx. 14 EUR) per person and night is very good, related to the other available accommodations in Longyearbyen. Downton Longyearbyen is approx 4km away. This distance could be walked or driven by one of the rental bikes, fairly save regarding the polar bears running around. There you find all needed supply (Bank, super market, restaurants, etc.). The new manager is very kind and active. Since the airport is operated approx. 3-4 times per day, some helicopter traffic happens and the road at the place is more used than expected, i put only 4 start for quietness. The sanitary equipment is elementary, to have warm showers you must buy some “coins”, so only 3 stars. Since Svalbard is not a regular vacancy location the “Suitable” section could not be compared. If you are plan to hike on Svalbard, you will find the campground an excellent starting point. Summary: E very extraordinaryground, with an exceptional location and excellent price-service-ratio!

Description

Profile

There’s oft much talk about sleeping peacefully under the starry night sky, but ever wondered what it’s like to snooze under the midnight sun instead? Well as this is the world’s northernmost site (in the world’s northernmost town), between early …spring and autumn the sun never sets... The friendly site team will happily help sort excursions and find good hiking trails from the site; it’s worth noting that all visitors to Svalbard are required by law to carry a rifle when leaving any settlement to go out into the wilderness, for more than 3,000 polar bears inhabit the isle’s icy lands. Local tour operators around Svalbard organise all sorts of adventurous excursions, from boat trips and dog sledding adventures to snowmobiling and quad bike tours; also generously, visitors can borrow bikes at no charge from the tourist information office. With views over a bird-filled fjord towards mountains in the middle distance, this spectacular site’s guests come here for a peaceful and highly scenic stay among Arctic nature, as it's oft visited by the wild likes of curious reindeer, leucistic barnacle geese and heaps of other feathered migratory critters. In the summer here, temperatures average between two and and 15 degrees centigrade, so be sure to pack up your long johns and other thermal garb – aside from that fear not, for a camping stove shall not be required: stays are made most cosy, as at your disposal is a service complex with guest amenities like a heated bathroom and a fully equipped communal kitchen.
