Rock 'n' Roll
On Camping Holiday
More and more campsites are providing the appropriate infrastructure to offer campers with disabilities a wonderful break in the great outdoors. To enable a wheelchair-accessible holiday, these three things should be taken into account when planning:
- The arrival to the campsite has to be accessible
- The lodging at the campsite (caravan/motorhome/rental property) is suitable for wheelchairs
- A plus: Activities, like access to the beach, workshops on-site or also hiking trails are also accessible for wheelchairs
Accessible Camping: The Right Accommodation
Good news for all those who prefer "classic camping" and are less keen on spending the night in an apartment: More and more caravan and motorhome manufacturers are now bringing adapted vehicles for people with physical disabilities on the market. The latter have, for example, access to the motorhome via a ramp or lift, extra-wide doors, a larger and accessible interior as well as an accessible toilet.
If you want to try out a holiday with a wheelchair on a campsite, the best thing to do is to rent a wheelchair-accessible camping vehicle. This will not only give you the necessary experience, but will also save you money compared to buying a new motorhome.
Tips for choosing the Best Campsite
When planning a holiday with a wheelchair the choice of the right campsite is the be-all and end-all. Prior to your arrival, you should check carefully whether the selected campsite meets your individual requirements.
Depending on your needs, wheelchair accessible infrastructure, such as well-developed, short and firm footpaths and disabled parking spaces for easy entry and exit, can be crucial when planning your holiday. Accessible campsites offer disabled-friendly facilities, meaning the supermarket, reception, sanitary facilities and restaurant have a step-free entrance and sufficiently wide corridors and doors. Accessible campsites also guarantee wheelchair access to swimming pools, wellness areas and the beach or lake. Other areas that are not at ground level should also be accessible for wheelchair users by means of a ramp or a lift.
Inclusive leisure facilities and adapted sports programmes are also no longer a rarity on accessible sites.

Frequently Asked: All About Accessible Camping
What equipment does a wheelchair-accessible motorhome have?
Camping is spending the night in a ‘home on wheels’: A wheelchair-accessible camper or accessible caravan should therefore have basic adaptations that can also be found in accessible flats or houses:
- Access to the mobile home: This can be via a ramp or a lift.
- Wider doors: Doors that are about 90 cm wide make access easier.
- Spacious and accessible interior: The interior should offer sufficient space to move around easily in a wheelchair.
- Adaptations to the driver's cabin: This includes, for example, an adapted driver's seat or special control elements.
- Barrier-free bathroom: A wheelchair-accessible toilet and shower with transfer aids are essential.
- Wheelchair-accessible home adaptations: These include lower beds and an adapted kitchenette.
More and more vehicle manufacturers are committed to accessible travel and ensure that holidays in a motorhome are comfortable and easy for wheelchair users.
What requirements should accessible campsites fulfil?
An accessible campsite should meet certain criteria so that people with restricted mobility can also discover and enjoy their camping holiday to the fullest:
1) Accessible facilities: Important facilities such as reception, supermarkets or restaurants should have stepless entrances as well as wide doors and corridors that are suitable for wheelchair users.
2) Accessible paths: The paths between the individual facilities of the campsite should be at ground level, short and wheelchair-accessible.
3) Ramps and lifts: Facilities that are not at ground level must have ramps or lifts.
4) Disability-friendly pitches: The car parks or pitches should be designed for motorhomes with disabled access.
5) Disability-friendly sanitary facilities: These should be at ground level, spacious and equipped with grab rails or bars. Such sanitary facilities should also be available within certain facilities such as restaurants.
6) Barrier-free communal facilities: Communal facilities such as swimming pools, sauna or wellness areas and playgrounds should also have barrier-free access.
The needs of accessible camping vary depending on the disability. Certain adaptations can ensure that people with reduced mobility can enjoy their holiday at the campsite without restrictions.
How do I find accessible campsites?
There are various websites or apps on which you can find accessible campsites. Here on camping.info, for example, there are a whopping four filters (barrier-free sanitary facilities, ramps for wheelchair users, barrier-free access to water, most paths paved) in the search to find explicitly wheelchair-accessible campsites. Many campsites indicate on their own websites whether they are barrier-free and what accessible facilities they offer.
If you are looking for more information on accessible facilities, it is best to call the campsite directly to clarify any questions in advance.
What does "barrier-free camping" mean?
The term ‘barrier-free’ usually refers to the fact that a campsite is accessible for people with impaired mobility. However, with regard to the further development of barrier-free campsites, it is important to remove other barriers that are not only related to mobility.
For example, high-contrast information signs and braille in the menu of the campsite restaurant are very helpful for people with impaired vision.
What does the ‘Reisen für alle’ seal mean at campsites?
The ‘Reisen für alle’ label (meaning 'Travelling for all') can be found on around 60 campsites in Germany and is based on various accessibility criteria. The label serves as an information and evaluation system that enables campers to assess the suitability of the offer for their needs themselves. This is not a self-assessment of the establishment.
