Attention: Legal Requirements for your Workation
If you work abroad as a camper, e.g. work for your employer based in Germany from the campsite in Spain, then some legal requirements (depending on the right of residence) can play badly into your workation cards. Your situation is better if the employer has a subsidiary in the country where you are currently working remotely from. In this case, the issuance of a work and residence permit can be done relatively easily.
You should also seek professional advice on the subject of social security. In principle, the provisions of national law always apply when working abroad (unless, for example, there is a posting or regular employment in several Member States). Since July 1, 2023, however, there has been a new multilateral framework convention for workation abroad. Under certain circumstances, an exemption agreement can then be made with the relevant authority abroad to ensure that German social security legislation continues to apply to you. Be sure to check with your employer before working abroad.

Frequently Asked: All About Remote Work at the Campsite
Where at the campsite can I work remotely?
At more modern campsites there are often designated coworking spaces, equipped specifically for the needs of remote workers. Most of the time they offer a stable WiFi connection, power outlets and sometimes even coffee.
If your campsite doesn't have such spaces, common rooms or lounge areas could be an alternative. Some people even make themselves a small office corner in their own camper or caravan.
If you want to enjoy nature to the fullest, a pavilion with side curtains would be ideal to have a little privacy and protection from the wind and sun. Secluded, quieter areas of the campsite, away from playgrounds and common areas, can also be good options.
What do I need for remote work at the campsite?
For an actual office at the campsite, you need a few important things. By combining these things, you can work productively while enjoying the freedom of camping life.
-
A stable internet connection: This could be either the WiFi at the campsite or a mobile hotspot.
-
Power supply: Think about how you want to charge your devices. A solar-powered charger or a small generator could be useful.
-
An adequate workplace: A comfortable chair and sturdy desk are the least you could do.
-
Protect your electronics: Don't forget weather-proof containers for laptop & co. in case you work outside.
-
Headphones: These could be helpful in shielding you from the surrounding noise.

What office supplies should I bring to the campsite?
If you want to work remotely at the campsite, some office supplies are indispensable. Of course, you'll need your laptop and the charger that comes with it. A mobile hotspot can also be very useful if the Wi-Fi at the campsite is not reliable enough. Notebooks and pens are always good for quickly writing down ideas. A small, portable printer can also be handy. USB flash drives or external hard drives are important for additional storage space and backups. Depending on your needs, a calculator, sticky notes, staples and paper clips can also be useful. But also think of a good, portable lamp in case you have to work until the late hours.
